The 4-Hour Rule
Never burn a candle for more than 4 hours at one time. Burning beyond this limit can:
- Cause the wick to grow too long, increasing flame height beyond safe levels.
- Overheat the container, risking cracking or breakage.
- Create excessive soot and carbon buildup in the wick.
- Deplete oxygen in a small room when multiple candles are burning simultaneously.
Allow the candle to cool completely — at least 2 hours — before relighting.
The First Burn
The first burn of a container candle is critical. Allow the melt pool to reach all edges of the container before extinguishing. This prevents tunneling and ensures even wax consumption throughout the candle's life.
- Allow approximately 1 hour of burn time per inch of container diameter.
- A 3-inch diameter jar should burn for at least 3 hours on first light.
Safe Placement
- Keep burning candles at least 12 inches away from anything flammable.
- Never place a candle in a drafty location — fans, vents, and open windows cause uneven burning and soot.
- Keep candles out of reach of children and pets at all times.
- Never leave a burning candle in an unoccupied room.
- Do not move a burning candle — hot liquid wax can spill and cause burns.
- Keep candles away from direct sunlight to prevent discoloration and softening.
Extinguishing & Storage
- Use a snuffer: Do not blow out candles — it spreads wax droplets and smoke.
- Let wax solidify: Before covering with a lid.
- No water: Thermal shock can crack glass containers.
- Storage temperature: 50–77°F (10–25°C), away from direct sunlight.
- Keep lids on: To prevent dust accumulation and scent loss during storage.
- Avoid refrigerators: Condensation damages the wax surface finish.
