Flame Height Requirements
Per ASTM F2417, a candle must not produce a flame height exceeding 3 inches (76mm) above the top of the candle or container during normal burning under controlled conditions.
- Flame must not ignite materials placed at a standard safe distance.
- No sustained flaring that could ignite nearby materials.
- Afterglow must extinguish within 2 minutes after the flame is extinguished.
Melt Pool & Drip Requirements
- Dripping wax must not ignite if it falls onto a non-combustible surface during testing.
- Pooling wax must stay contained within the vessel for container candles.
- Pillar candle flames must not contact the outer wall of the candle.
- The melt pool must never overflow the container.
Container integrity is critical — jars must withstand thermal shock across the full burn cycle.
Multi-Candle & Proximity Burn Rules
- Space multiple candles at least 3 inches apart when burning simultaneously.
- Candles must not pose an ignition risk to surfaces 12 inches below overhead cabinetry.
- Burn time per session should be limited as specified on the label (typically 4 hours maximum).
