How the SKU generator works

A SKU is your own short code for one product version: Vanilla Bean in an 8 oz jar is one SKU, and every jar of it you ever pour shares that code. The generator builds it from the parts you choose — product type, scent and size, plus an optional prefix or collection — and shortens each part to a few letters you can change.

Each SKU also gets a Code 128 barcode. Download it as a picture for your label app or thermal printer, or print a sheet of labels. Add every scent and size you sell, and you get a SKU for each combination at once.

A worked example

A candle in Vanilla Bean, 8 oz: CND-VAB-8OZ. The same scent in 14 oz: CND-VAB-14OZ. Wax melts in Sweater Weather, a 6 pack: MLT-SWW-6PK. Four scents in two sizes make eight SKUs, all with the same pattern, so you can read any of them at a glance.

Common mistakes

• Giving every jar its own number. A SKU names the product, not the single candle; use your batch code to tell pours apart.
• Reusing the SKU of a scent you retired. Old sales records and shop listings get mixed up.
• Long codes with spaces or symbols. They break spreadsheets and shop uploads, and long barcodes are hard to fit on a small label.
• Two scents that shorten to the same code. The generator warns you, so give one of them its own short code.
